In Chapter 13 I learned a lot of new information that I never knew. For example I learned how important peers are to children in middle childhood. Peers are crucial for social development during this time period. Each cohort of children has a culture of childhood, passed down from slightly older children. Close friends are particular helpful during these years. Popular children may be cooperative and easy to get along with or may be competitive and aggressive. Much depends on the age and culture of the children.
Rejected children may be neglected, aggressive, or withdrawn. In North America shy children are not popular, but in 1990 in Shanghai children who were shy were respected and often popular. Aggressive-rejected is rejected by peers because of antagonistic, con-frontal behavior. Withdrawn-rejected is rejected by peers because of timid, withdrawn, and anxious behavior.
