I found the
section about using physical punishment used on children to be very
interesting. The book talks about how about how children over the age of 6 who
are still physically punished may develop psychological problems, etc. Personally
I have never been hit or spanked or any other type of physical punishment by my
parents. I was just put in time-out multiple times of the day. I do not think
that physical punishment is a good technique in disciplining kids because it
teaches them to hit, etc. I also think that it is an easy way out for the
parents because putting a kid in time-out or yelling at them and explaining why
something what they did is wrong. I also saw a study done that children
sometimes will do something bad just so they get hit and then receive attention
from their parents even if it is bad. Hitting also teaches that violence is an
acceptable solution in solving problems. I definitely think other forms of
punishment can be used rather than violence like time-out, etc.
