Week 6 Post 1

I found the topic of motivation to be very interesting while reading Chapter 10. I never actually knew that there were two types of motivation but I was aware that people are motivated by different reasons. One of the two types of motivations is intrinsic motivation. When people have intrinsic motivation they have an inner drive to reach their own specific goals (Berger, p. 266). Extrinsic motivation is another type of motivation. Extrinsic motivation means that someone’s reasoning for doing something is to achieve some sort of reward or recognition for their achievements (Berger, p. 267). In my opinion, I believe intrinsic motivation is better than extrinsic motivation. I feel like when I set my own personal goals for myself, I achieve them much faster than if I were to only focused on what others thought of my achievements. The best example I can give is that I love to play field hockey. However, if I only played it for the awards and recognition of it I feel like I wouldn’t actually be having fun. I’d feel a lot more pressure than I would need to feel and I would lose sight of the real reason why I play field hockey. On the other, I have to admit I sometimes use both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation when it comes to school work. I set goals for myself that help me to learn and comprehend material so that I can have a better understanding about a specific subject. Yet, I sometimes find myself thinking about my results and grades of a particular class. The classes that I find myself focusing more on my grades are the classes that I am not very good at understanding the material which could be because I have less interest in the subject.
