In chapter 12 another topic that was discussed was memory
and how items are able to stay present in one’s mind over time. The three types
of memory are sensory, working and long term memory. While choosing to discuss
about memory it made me think of individuals who get older and develop dementia
which then lead to past memories that happened when they might have been
younger. Have you ever wonder why that may happen? Or have you ever wondered
while studying for a test why do you remember one topic of information over
another? The beginning stage of memory happens first by being exposed and
stimulates a piece of information to the brain in a split second. Next our
brain chooses specific things to remember and want to store which is the start
of the working memory and happens shortly after an action or item is stated. Then
over time our brains create long term memory which is when information is
stored for long periods of time not only hour or months but years. When
studying for a test some information could be stored in our working memory and
others in the long term memory; especially if an individual has learned similar
information before from another class. Also when a person becomes older and
they refer to there child hood memories those pieces are stored in there long
term memory.
