Erickson's fourth stage of a psychosocial crisis is called industry versus inferiority where children struggle to with becoming productive members of society and feeling incompetent.This fourth stage a transition time in middle childhood, when a child drops imaginative playtime, to put skills and talents towards the betterment of society. This is a crucial time for a child when they define themselves as being helpful or non-productive. Viewing themselves in a positive light is very crucial for avoiding emotional problems (p. 351).
