Week 6 Post 2
The discussion post for week 6 on D2L was about parenting styles, which was discussed in Chapter 10. After reading about Diana Baumrind's three styles of parenting. She found that parents differed on four dimensions; expressions of warmth, strategies for discipline, communication, and expectations for maturity. I evaluated my own parents on these four dimensions and placed my parents in the parenting style of authoritative. My parents had rules for me and my sister. Sometimes the rules were strict, such as an early curfew, but otherwise my parents were flexible. When I asked my mother if I could do something, my parents and I had a civil discussion about it until they came to an agreement. For example, one time I asked my mother if I could go to the movies with a friend. The movie would've ran past my curfew and we wanted to go to the movie theater in a part of Reading city that is not the safest. After discussing with my parents, I was able to go to the late movie and stay out past my curfew but I had to go to the movie theater in Wyomissing because they didn't like me going into Reading. This is an example of how an authoritative parent sets limits and enforces rules but listens to children and have high communication.
