Week 6 post 1

When reading this weeks chapter different thinks struck my attention and one thing that I would like to focus on is the new media which effecting children and parents. The new media has positives and negatives which greatly enhances our society but also hurts the way one learns. As our textbook focuses on the media it presents the challenges for each individual that may be a parent or a child. In the future the styles of parenting may change and maybe more parents will be stricter or relaxed since more and more of the media are playing a huge role in there children’s lives. In today’s society the media is everywhere an individual goes; such as on billboards, television, cell phones, magazines, grocery stores etc. Stated from the text that is a really good point that can effect situation within our society is, “all media such as TV, cell phones….can be harmful, especially when the content is violent,” (p.276). Not all of the media can be harmful to children but can be a learning tool for them to use. One example of media being a learning tool is computer educational programs such as math problems, or thinking questions to challenge or test the child’s skills. Since new media is being created often parents have to incorporate limits and rules in there ways of discipline so the child does not over use or absorb so much time with electronics. Ways that parents may set limits are one television show a day or taking away other privileges when a chore or another activity is not being completed when asked. Something that has been found about children watching or being influenced by violent media is it can affect a child’s grades/education. Also when the child overuses media it can decrease the level of imagination one has with others in social interaction. To decrease the statistics of children watching or being involved in the media parents should set limits but also incorporate ways that the media can be educational for them to learn new things.
