Week 4 Post 1

In our text this week we were introduced to emotional development. During the toddler stage of life new emotion appear; such as pride, shame, embarrassment, disgust, and gust awareness which emerges from family interactions. The most shocking thing to me, though, was the cultural differences in how each of us take these emotions which is modeled by our culture. For example, North American parent's encourage pride in their toddlers by saying 'you did it yourself' whether that being true or not. But on the flip side, Asian families discourage pride and create modesty and shame into their toddlers. Even though these two different extremes are relevant in our society, disgust is mainly influenced by other people no matter what culture you're grown up in. This meaning children learn what to have disgust towards and what to not by what those around them react to in disgust. I just really love to learn about the different cultures and how we all are living on the same planet but we are living out our lives in so many uncountable ways. This just really inspires me to dig deeper into cultural difference in this subject of psychology while also finding other ways to learn of other people's cultures.
