This chapter explained to us all about human development and
different people’s theories about how and why we are the way we are. Freud says
that we are the way we are because of how we solved the three sexual conflicts
determine who we are today. Erikson also believed unresolved conflicts during
childhood affects how your personality is when you’re older. Psychologists
often believe that environment and how you were raised has a lot to do with your
personality and why people become the person they are. Although I think that these
things are a major factors in development I don’t think they define and are a
sure thing of how you’re going to turn out.
Everyday people overcome their environments and their situations and
become a different person. The things that happen to you don’t define you, it’s
how you react to those situations and how you overcome them. You can be from
the richest family and have the best opportunities but end up being dirt poor
and living in a box from the decisions you made and vice versa. So although I
don’t believe in Freud’s sexual stages when we’re little kids I do believe him
and Erikson were onto something when they said it’s how we overcome certain
conflicts that shape us to be the way we are.
