Week 3 post 1

This section was very interesting to me because I never understood how we learn to talk when we are younger. Being an only child I was never around younger children much, I have all older or the same age family members and obviously in school they pair you with kids similar to your age. So babies and small children have always scared me because they’re fragile. Whenever someone would give me one to hold id always be afraid I’d drop it and quickly give the baby back or pass it on to someone else. I never realized that the babies were actually trying to communicate or anything when they were gurgling I just thought they were drooling or trying to burp. I always thought baby talk was annoying and that parents should just speak normally to their kid so they could learn how to speak. However it turns out that the high pitched tone of a mother’s voice or the slow nature of the talk helps the baby react more. By using different melodies and intonations the babies understand better. I also read an article about how the baby starts to learn still in the womb. The vibrations of the mom talking in the belly make the fetus react. The research shows the fetus starts making a connection to language even earlier than before thought. It’s amazing to see how much babies pick up and how important those first months and years of life are!
