Week 3: Post 1

I thought the topics that we read and learned about this week were very interesting. I’m on the younger end of the spectrum on both sides of my family, so I didn’t really grow up having infant siblings or cousins. Now, however, I have younger second-cousins that I am able to see, and it is fun to be able to watch them learn new skills and interact with them. I think it’s interesting to be able to watch babies grow and progress both mentally and physically. The way that babies learn to talk has always been a topic of interest to me. I remember in my seventh grade German class when my teacher told us how she was teaching her twin infant sons both English and German. She told us that she would “roar” like a lion, and her sons could say the word “lion” in both languages. I remember being confused as to how children of such a young age could understand more than one language. (I was also a little envious that neither of my parents was bilingual, since I’ve always wanted to be fluent in French and learning to speak it at such a young age would have been so much easier than learning as an adult). Is anyone in this class bilingual? If so, at what age did you learn your second language?
