In this chapter I found Harry Harlow study on infant monkey
very interesting. Of the reason why I found this study interesting is the
relation of infant monkey and infant children. This study was to figure out why
children love their mothers. At first both behaviorism and psychoanalytic theory
originally thought that mothers are loved because they satisfy the newborn’s
hunger and sucking needs. Infant monkeys were more attached to cloth diapers
than their bottles. Harlow concluded that mothering is not primarily about feeding
but about what is called love. A mother’s love is more involved more contact. I
read an article stating that children development faster and better when they
have more physical contact from others. A simple touch to a infant can help it
develop. If a baby is premature nurses and doctors tries to get the parents to
gently touch the infant to help it develop. A simple touch is proven to be very
powerful. I thought that this experiment was very informative because I would
never thought of a simple touch as a way for children to develop, but I guess
when I think about the study it does
makes sense because a simple hug can cheer someone up so a simple touch can have
either the same affect or a better affect.
