Week 2: Post 2

I asked my fiance how humans develop into the person they become, he said that parenting is the key influence. I then asked him if he thinks media has an influence on human development, he responded by saying that it does somewhat. He continued to explain that he thinks that even though media has an effect, it is up to the parents how much their child is exposed to the media.

This made me think of how my parents raised my sister and I. We were not allowed to watch MTV or even Looney Toons for that matter. My dad did not allow us to watch Bugs Bunny because Elmer Fudd carried a gun and Wiley Coyote had anvils dropped on his head. My dad said these were too violent and he did not want my sister and me getting any ideas to hurt each other. Another thing my parents did not encourage was rap or hip-hop music. My parents said that that type of music was too inappropiate for us and thus played selected music for us in the car. In comparison, I remember a neighbor girl on my street who, when we were 10 years old, was allowed to listen to Nelly, 50 cent, Usher, and other artists along those lines. A few years later, she ended up having a baby at an early age and countless boyfriends. Did music influence her to act how she did?  Well, maybe. But, I do recall her mom had her when she was 16 years old, so young pregnancy was in her family. Her mom was also divorced from her dad. This makes me agree with what my fiance said. As in my other post, I did mention this is how I feel humans develop. Parenting and adult role models have a huge impact in children and adolescents. In the text, this is called modeling. Humans act a certain way to be like those whom they idolize. I grew up idolizing my mother and I can definitely see how I am growing up to be just like her. Growing up, I complained about my parents, but now I thank them for causing me to become the woman I am today.
