Week 1 Post 1
The thing that stood out to me the most was that in the middle of the chapter when it was told that boys who were mistreated by their parents were about twice as likely to be overly aggressive, but only if they have a low MAOA gene. It makes sense to me how these two things could be linked, you'd assume that as a child if you were being raised by aggressive parents that you too would mirror that same behavior. On the other hand, I also feel as if you are being surrounded by that kind of parenting that the child could also come out being very shy and keep to themselves. So I find it very interesting that these two extremes could come from the same experience. I am really unfamiliar with what exactly the MAOA gene is. How would this affect the outcome of a person who grows up with an aggressive household? This kind of behavior, I believe, would be in the multicontextual phase in human development. I've learned that in the multicontextual phase there is three separate levels that may affect each person. The level that best fits the aggressive household environment would be the microsystem level. Where are these are the microsystem elements, that being your intermediate surroundings. For example, your family, friends, school, religion, may all be an example of an intermediate surrounding. So as you can see, living with an aggressive parental system would easily fall into this category.
