Week 3
I loved this section for many reasons. I absolutely love babies and small children. I have dealt with a lot of the different scenarios that were talked about in the video we watched in part 1 of our discussion. When my little brother was just a baby, I used to talk to him in such a sweet calm voice. He always seemed to respond better to my mother and I when we talked to him, compared to my older brother and father. After watching the video, I learned that this was the case because babies respond to a softer and more higher pitch voices over deeper and not as calm voices. When my little brother was entering into the babbling stage he would babble on and on and on. As he grew he progressed just like any other baby does. I never knew that he was actually understanding what we were saying to him by making the connection with objects we were pointing to or holding while talking to him. For example in the video it said that when a mother is holding a bottle and saying to the baby "do you want the bottle" and pointing to the bottle while saying those words, the baby understands completely what the parents intentions are even though he or she does not understand the meaning of the words. Something else I found really interesting is that babies from all over the world develop at relevantly the same speeds. I guess I never really thought about this, but the research that I found for part 3 of my discussion explained this a lot more clearly. That shows that there is also some biological process that is already within us. I always thought that everything we learned as a small child came from what parents taught us or how we perceived what are parents did. After doing my discussion I realized that not everything is taught to a baby.
