Week 2 Post 1
This week we focused on developmental theories. What really got me thinking was when we were introduced to Freud's Ideas on human development. It's interesting how he bases his believes off of sexual interest and pleasure that is centered on a particular part of the body. I just think this is kind of odd because when you think of children you don't really think of them even having sexual interests or pleasures. Freud highlights three different stages; oral stage, anal stage, and the phallic stage. These all happening in the first six years of life. Any conflict that may have happened in any of these stages, the way the child will experience and then resolve this conflict will help determine you personality traits. How insane is that? To believe that something that may have happened to you during your anal stage will help mold who you will essentially become for the rest of your life. Freud says that adult personalities and habits are influenced by your earlier stages. An example of this would be how your child-parent relationship is a model for all forms of intimacy in your adult life. When I took a step back and thought about it, I couldn't agree more with Freud's belief in this. Parent's have probably the biggest influence on your life, and I don't know if everyone realizes that.
