As we discussed the topic of dialectical thought and how it
effects emerging adults the topic from our text about stereotypes can up and
appealed to my interest. The topic of stereotypes can across my interest from
the text since in our society we all make stereotypical judgments at some point
in our life. Do you ever wonder what another individual may be thinking about
you or have you ever pasted a judgment of a person of a different background
from you? All the thoughts you have brought together during those situations
are stereotypes. Our texts points out that some adults in our society do not
believe or cannot come to the conclusion that they are not creating stereotypes
about others of a different racial background (also known as racial prejudice)
(Berger,498). Not only do our families and values and beliefs play a role in
our life but our society’s influences; such as norms. It is sad that in our
society that judgments or stereotypes are placed on a person our particular
group which could be expressed not only through words but emotions towards
others. One may not realize that they are placing a stereotype on a certain group
by generalizing a topic such as everyone who is one welfare are using the
system. For the example just listed how does that person really know about
every individual who are using that public assistance service are using the
system; they don’t. Also stereotypes can create a threat to an individual which
influence the formation of information. This topic of stereotypes relates to
the topic of the book in chapter 18 of post formal thought by the information
taught in the beginning stages of a child’s life which can be prevented if they
were taught not to have closure in certain topic or understanding in certain
areas.
