Week 11 Post 2

While reading Chapter 18, I took a real interest in learning about dialectical thinking. I had never heard of this type of thinking until I read this chapter. I feel like the older people get, the more they realize that they use dialectical thinking. Also, I think as people use it more they start to make better decisions because they are using it. Besides the post that I made on Desire2Learn, I thought of another example to help explain and understand dialectical thinking. I thought back to the thesis of “caring is sharing”. Obviously when someone is younger they don’t really understand the concept or importance of sharing until they are older. The example I have of sharing happened to me when I was in high school. During my senior year my high school decided to have a clothing drive. I remember my mom telling me that I have a bunch of clothes that I should donate. However, at the time I really didn’t want to give away my clothes. The antithesis of this was that I didn’t want to give away my clothes because I believed that because they were mine I should keep them. Yet, the more I started to think about it the more I began to realize that I really didn’t need two kinds of black jackets nor did a need ten pairs of jeans. The synthesis of this situation was that I realized that someone else needed my extra clothes more than I did. By giving away some of my clothes I was able to help someone who really needed it and to me that was better than having too many extra clothes.
