Week 10, Post 2

I thought two identities were interesting out of the psychosocial development. Identity achievement is the process of children maturing in decision making, career direction and pursuing an independent lifestyle. In this process they are more likely to stick to commitments, exercise accepting and rejecting others, and select friends who have the same goals towards seeking independence. Another interesting term was identity moratorium is the process of postponing full maturity by exploration.  This is accompanied by anxiety, few commitments, rebellion and guilt. In addition, Erickson proposed another psychosocial identity called sexual identity. Erikson proposed confused adolescents would soon discover their sexual identity with time. Later his term was replaced by gender identity which refers to the identification of gender roles through society’s expectations. to a person’s self-definition as male or female. This type of identity is constantly changing because society standards keep changing. I think in order to define and evaluate ourselves we use social comparison. Gaining identity in today's world is probably more difficult due to the change in laws and society.
