Week 11 Post 1
In chapter 18 it mentions stereotypes and it's harm on other people. Stereotype threat is the possibility that one's appearance or behavior will be misread to confirm another person's oversimplified prejudiced attitudes. The book says that the mere possibility of being negatively stereotyped arouses emotions that can disrupt cognition as well as emotional regulation. The threat of bias is if students fear that others expect them to do poorly in school because of their ethnicity or gender, they might not identify with academic and thus do worse on exam than they otherwise would have. I believe that most teenagers at one time in middle school or high school has experienced some kind of stereotype. I know in high school I was a cheerleader, and the stereotype for cheerleaders was that we were mean and snotty. But in all honesty I was not mean. It just that most people believed since someone belonged so a certain group or sports team they all believed we were the same.
