For time management I definitely had to adjust in college.
In high school I had a job, clubs, social life, and schoolwork to all juggle
however I feel like it was easier being at home because as much as I hated the
nagging my parents kept me on tract and socializing wasn’t really as much of an
issue. In college however you’re always surrounded by your friends because you’re
living with them. Therefore the distractions
are greater in college when time management is needed the most. I definitely
have encountered delay discounting, the tendency to undervalue, or downright
ignore, future consequences and rewards in favor of more immediate
gratification. For example I have skipped class, even though I know it’s
important, in order to hang out with my friends or go to dinner with them or something like that not weighing the
consequences of my actions like missing an important assignment being
discussed. For example even now, when I
know that this blog is due tonight and I have a 6-9 class I am playing this new
minion rush app for the iPhone that I’m addicted to. I know that I should ultimately
be focusing on the blog and not a silly game, but my brain is telling me to
play the game because it is more fun than writing a blog and focusing on
homework. However my time management has definitely improved. I am completing
assignments in advance and studying days before instead of the night before
like I use to in highschool. I’ve learned to do work little by little so it
doesn’t pile up on me.
