Week 11 Post 1
Chapter 18 was about the cognitive development of emerging adults. One section that interested me was the differences in morality between males and females. A Harvard professor, Carol Gilligan, believes that males and females think differently about parenthood, abortion, and anything that deals with decisions about reproduction. Women develop a morality of care. Women are socialized to be a nurturer and compassionate so they give human needs and relationships the highest priority. Men develop a morality of justice and are taught to distinguish right and wrong. I agree with Gilligan when you think about the differences of how men and women think about reproductive decisions. Other researchers say there are no gender differences in moral thinking. Factors such as education and culture have a greater influence on a person's moral judgements rather than gender. I found this interesting because these differences in studies show how different researchers come to different conclusions about the same idea. In psychology, researchers will always have different opinions and come across different conclusions about the same thing.
