Week 15 Post 1

When reading chapter 24 I found it so sad and scary to read about people who suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s and that fact that these disease cannot be cured. Dementia is an irreversible loss of intellectual functioning caused by organic brain damage or disease. Alzheimers is the most common cause of dementia, characterized by gradual deterioration of memory and personality. I read a book about a neuroscience professor who actually studied dementia but then later in life got the disease. It was so sad to read her book because there’s no cure and ultimately you know that soon you are going to forget everything you’ve done and learned and worked for and forget the names of your relatives and friends and even your children and husband/wife. Naturally when people are diagnosed with Alzheimers or another form of dementia they will become depressed and have no will to try to prevent the disease since they know it can’t be cured only put off. There are pills that push off the inevitable. However exercises such as puzzles and word games that keep the brain active can push off things like this from happening and hopefully a cure will be found soon!
