I also found the subject on personalities very interesting
in the book. However I slightly disagree with the book. For example I would
classify myself as having an Agreeableness personality. However I would also
put myself in the openness category. When
I was in high school we had people come in and talk to us about choosing jobs.
We all took a test about our personalities, etc. and then the results matched
us up for jobs that are good for us. The kid next to me who took the test wasn’t
exactly known to be a good person to hang around i.e. he was known for doing
drugs and getting in trouble and skipping class. However the test matched him
up as having a good career in brain surgery. Whereas I was an honors student
and the test matched me up as being a vending machine operator. Not that there
is nothing wrong with either of these jobs it was just weird that they matched
that up based on our personalities. I also didn’t like how they told us which
jobs would be good for you and which jobs would be bad. For example I am a shy
person until I get to know people then I am open and bubbly around them. I love
my Public relations major however when the guy was presenting he told us that
it would not be a good career field for me because of this. I don’t think
anyone should be told what jobs are good and bad for them. Yes I think that
suggestions are allowed to be made based on interests but people’s
personalities change all the time so I don’t think this should effect the job
they choose to pursue.
I agree completely with you. No test should judge what career path would be best for you. Especially in your case, a vending machine operator almost would come off as an insult. You were an honor student so just because you're shy shouldn't put you lower on the career totem pole. I'm really happy you've chosen a career you enjoy and didn't let that test persuade you in any way.
